2014 Mazda 6 – The Perfect Blend of Comfort and Performance
The midsize sedan segment has been overhauled this year. The vast majority of models in this class have been refreshed or completely redesigned for 2013. As for Mazda, it has no plans to stay behind and watch the competition improve their models. As a matter of fact, the new 2014 Mazda 6 may just be the benchmark against which all other new midsize sedans will be judged.
Among its competition, the 2014 Mazda 6’s exterior styling is the most beautiful and sporty, at least according to our humble opinion. The new 6 is inspired by Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy that blends flowing lines with sharp angles to create a bold, dynamic look that certainly befits the Mazda’s sporty personality.
The grill and headlights remind us of the Mazda CX-5 SUV while the side’s long, curvy lines that flow all the way to the back create an illusion of motion and speed. 2014 Mazda 6 GX and GS models get 17 inch wheels while the top-of-the-line Mazda 6 GT gets stunning 19 inch wheels that truly bring the car to life.
The 2014 Mazda 6 combines a functional interior layout with a beautiful German-inspired design that blends quality materials with excellent workmanship. The interior is slightly more spacious than the outgoing model and has retained the latter’s comfort and functionality.
There are plenty of small storage spaces inside the new Mazda6, from a hidden area at the bottom of the center console to large areas in the doors. The front seats are comfortable and well-bolstered making sporty driving a pleasant experience. The ideal driving position is easy to find and the driver benefits from good head and shoulder room. The rear seats are also comfortable enough to keep everyone happy on long drives, and leg and headroom is a notch above the previous generation.
The trunk offers 419 liters of cargo space which is slightly less than the previous generation, although the layout and design is better though out. Therefore, the new owner should not be under the impression that the new Mazda6 can hold less cargo.
On the road
Where the new 2014 Mazda 6 truly shines is in driving dynamics, handling, and sportiness. Mazda has foregone the idea of offering a V6 engine and the only powertrain available on the brand new 6 is a 2.5 liter 4-cylindre SKYACTIV-G engine that delivers 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque.
SKYACTIV technology is more than just an engine. In reality, it is a group of modifications and improvements that have been made to the chassis, the engine, and the transmission in order to improve fuel economy without taking away from Mazda’s zoom-zoom image and its fun-to-drive personality that buyers expect. The vehicle is lighter; the transmission is optimized for improved fuel-efficiency and driving performance; and the engine features a remarkable 13:1 compression ratio that makes it both powerful and efficient.
The engine is powerful enough to move the new Mazda6 with noticeable ease. Accelerations are fluid and passing is a breeze. Plus, the 2014 Mazda’s fuel efficiency rating of 7.6 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 5.1 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway is one of the best in its class.
