2014 Mazda2 hatchback – Affordable and fuel-efficient for those that want the simple things

Mazda’s subcompact is the perfect vehicle for minimalists. The small car provides buyers with a slightly aggressive styling, a simple and easy-to-manage interior, and good fuel-economy ratings to boot. Consumers will also enjoy the sporty handling of the 2014 Mazda2, and the very affordable price tag attached to the car.

The automaker’s subcompact car has a starting MSRP of $14,450, and is available in two trim levels, the GX and the GS. The 2014 Mazda2 base GX trim is the more minimalistic of the two, though opting for the GX will provide you with rain-sensing windshield wipers, fog lights, and a body-coloured rear spoiler. One thing that remains the same no matter the trim, however, is the joker-like grille that is characteristic of several Mazda vehicles.

Inside the 5-door hatchback, consumers will find a comfortable environment with a simple display, and easy-to-use buttons. The 2014 Mazda2 does not need much, and offers basic features such as power door locks, a 12-volt power outlet, dual front cup holders and a rear one as well. Other features to note are the reclining bucket seats and the cloth upholstery. As for the entertainment aspect, MP3 functionality is also standard, along with USB and auxiliary input. Buyers can opt for other features when selecting the Convenience Package, that provides extra goodies like steering wheel-mounted audio controls, 2 additional speakers, and remote keyless entry, to name a few.

Features in the Convenience Package are standard on the GS trim, although 6 speakers are included, as opposed to just 2-4. Other additions include an exterior temperature gauge, sport cloth upholstery for the seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control and air conditioning, among others.

The vehicle also provides seating for up to 5 passengers, and 787 litres of cargo volume when the rear seats are folded with a 60/40 split.

Under the hood, both models share the same 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine that generates 100 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque. The front-wheel drive subcompact is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, though buyers can opt for a 4-speed automatic instead.

When driving the 2014 Mazda, drivers may notice how nimble and fun the small car is to drive, and the sporty handling certainly adds to the experience. The basic GX trim gives the hatchback an overall lightweight of 1,043 kg, another factor, in addition to its small size, that helps the driver zip in and out of parking spaces.

All that fun is quite fuel-efficient as well, as the consumption ratings are low enough to appreciate. When equipped with the manual transmission, consumers can anticipate a rating of 6.8/5.6 litres per 100 kilometres when in the city and on highway respectively. With the 4-speed automatic, consumption is rated at 7.1 L/100km when driving in the city, and 5.8 l/100 km when on the highway.

As for the safety aspect of the 2014 Mazda2, the hatchback includes airbags, child safety door locks, traction and stability control, to name just a few.

The 2014 Mazda2 is the perfect small car for buyers looking for an affordable and fuel-efficient hatchback. The automaker’s subcompact is also light and fun to drive, especially with its sporty handling.
