PHEV VS MHEV: HOW DO THEY WORK AND WHICH IS BETTER?

A PHEV is the better choice if you want meaningful electric-only driving and have access to regular charging, while an MHEV is better for drivers who want added efficiency without plugging in. The key difference is the size and capability of the electric system.

 

1. What Is The Difference Between A PHEV And MHEV?

Although both use a gas engine and electric technology, PHEVs and MHEVs work in very different ways.

  • MHEV — ELECTRIC ASSIST FOR THE GAS ENGINE

A mild hybrid uses a small battery and electric motor to support the gas engine rather than drive the vehicle independently. It can provide additional assistance during acceleration and help smooth stop-and-start driving. The battery recharges through regenerative braking, so the vehicle does not need to be plugged in and cannot drive in electric-only mode.

  • PHEV — ELECTRIC DRIVING WITH GAS BACKUP

A plug-in hybrid has a much larger battery and a more powerful electric motor, allowing it to travel on electricity alone for a limited distance. Its battery can be charged using an external power source, while regenerative braking and the gas engine can also provide energy. A PHEV can operate using electric power, a combination of electric and gas power, or the gas engine depending on the situation.

 

2. Mazda's PHEV And MHEV

Mazda offers both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology in models such as the CX-70 and CX-90.

  • MAZDA MHEV

The Mazda CX-70 MHEV produces up to 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of up to 5,000 lb when properly equipped. Its electric motor assists the gas engine during lower-load driving and recovers energy through regenerative braking. There is no charging plug or EV-only mode, making the system simple to use without changing your normal driving routine.

  • MAZDA PHEV

The Mazda CX-70 PHEV delivers 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 3,500 lb. Depending on the trim, it provides up to 43 km of electric-only driving and a total range of up to 801 km. A Level 2, 240V charger can charge the battery in about 1.3 hours, while a standard 120V outlet takes approximately 6.4 hours.

 

3. Which One Is Right For You?

An MHEV is a good option if you do not have convenient access to charging and want better efficiency without changing your driving habits. A PHEV is better suited to drivers who can charge at home or work and want to complete shorter trips using electric power while keeping a gas engine for longer drives.
